Collin College celebrated a major milestone in the expansion of its Wylie Campus with a topping out ceremony for the new Wylie Campus Workforce Education Center on Friday, Oct. 23. College leadership joined representatives from Skanska USA Building, the project’s construction partner, to sign the final steel beam before it was lifted into place, marking a significant step toward completing the new facility.

Spanning 66,309 square feet, the facility will expand Collin College’s capacity to serve students and help meet the growing workforce needs of Collin County. The facility will include specialized lab environments, general classrooms, faculty offices, a dedicated welding shop, an unconditioned fabrication materials yard, and shell space to accommodate future instructional programs.

“This new facility represents our continued commitment to providing students with the education and skills they need to succeed in today’s workforce,” said Dr. Neil Matkin, Collin College district president. “As Collin County continues to grow, we are focused on expanding opportunities for our students while preparing a highly skilled workforce that meets the ever-changing needs of our local industries.”

Students will receive hands-on training in programs including welding, HVAC, electronic engineering, and health professions, with additional disciplines to be announced. The facility is designed to support the region’s growing population and demand for graduates with technical skills.

“As demand for skilled technical workers continues to grow across Texas and the nation, colleges are investing in facilities to support the need,” said Dennis Yung, executive vice president and general manager for Skanska USA Building in Texas. “We’re strong proponents of the skilled trades, and we’re proud to work with Collin College to create a place where students can build hands-on skills and prepare for careers in these essential fields.”

The Collin College Wylie Campus, which opened in 2020, continues to grow with the Wylie Campus Workforce Education Center as the latest investment in the college’s future and workforce education.
