Salary and Incentive Pay
Base Salary
- $63,298 + 1% for each year of qualifying service + Incentive pay
- Average annual raises since 2002: 3.77%
- TCOLE Certificate: Officers receive additional pay for their highest obtained certification.

Hiring Process
The hiring process begins with your formal application submission followed by assessments designed to evaluate your cognitive and physical readiness for the role. These initial tests help ensure that candidates possess the essential mental sharpness and physical fitness needed to succeed in a law enforcement environment.

- Written Aptitude Testing – Pass the Standard & Associates aptitude test.
- Fitness Testing (Sworn Personnel Only) – Pass the DPS Concept 2 row test with ≥25%.
All applicants must meet the following hiring requirements:
Educational:
- Lateral
- 24 college credit hours PLUS two years continuous police officer experience OR Two years military experience (honorable)
- OR one year military police experience (honorable)
- Cadet
- High school diploma
Certification (Laterals Only):
- Current TCOLE peace officer license OR licensed by another state and obtained TCOLE peace officer license prior to employment
Additional Criteria:
- Valid Texas driver license and pass driving record check
Qualified candidates will advance to an interview panel, followed by comprehensive background checks. This stage ensures we select individuals with the character, judgment, and integrity necessary for service. Both the police department and the college conduct thorough investigations into your history.
- Interview Panel – Participate in a panel interview with department representatives.
- Police Department Background Investigation – Criminal, driving, and personal history check.
- Collin College Employment Verification and Background Investigation – Verification of employment, education, and additional background review by HR.
Candidates who successfully complete the initial steps may receive a conditional offer of employment. This offer is contingent on the successful completion of a series of evaluations designed to confirm your psychological, physical, and personal fitness for duty.
- Conditional Offer – Offered pending successful completion of final evaluations.
- Polygraph Examination – Confirms the accuracy of information provided.
- Psychological Evaluation – Assesses mental and emotional suitability.
- Medical Screening and Drug Testing – Ensures physical health and fitness for duty.
The final stage includes a personal interview with the Chief of Police and fingerprinting through the Texas Department of Public Safety. Once these final clearances are obtained, a formal offer of employment is extended.
- Chief of Police Interview – Final interview to ensure alignment with department values.
- DPS Fingerprinting – Final background check via state fingerprinting.
- Final Offer – Official offer to join the Collin College Police Department.

Automatic Disqualifiers
Please read the following disqualifiers carefully. Due to time constraints and manpower
limitations, we will not contact applicants who fall within these guidelines for clarification.
Applicants for cadet or officer positions within the police department may be rejected
prior to or during a background investigation for any or all of the following criteria.
- Application must be typed or neatly handwritten by the applicant.
- Incomplete, incorrect, or missing required documents will result in disqualification.
- Required documents include transcripts, licenses, identification, military discharge papers (if applicable), and proof of financial responsibility.
- Any false statements, omissions, or misrepresentations will result in rejection.
- Personal History Statement (PHS) must be notarized unless otherwise approved.
- Applicants must demonstrate good moral character.
- Within the last three years: No more than three accidents or a combination of 3 or more accidents and moving violations.
- Within the last five years: No convictions for driving without insurance or a valid license.
- Within the last 10 years: No convictions for DUI, driving with a suspended license, unauthorized use of a vehicle, hit-and-run, or failure to comply after an accident.
- No current pending charges, probation, or court supervision for Class B misdemeanors or higher.
- No felony convictions.
- No convictions for Class A or B misdemeanors.
- No Class C assault convictions in the past 10 years.
- No domestic violence convictions or active protective orders.
- No prior probation, deferred adjudication, or community service related to Class A or B misdemeanors.
- No marijuana use within the past two years.
- No use of harder drugs within the past five–seven years (varies by substance).
- Selling, manufacturing, or distributing illegal drugs at any point is disqualifying.
- Use of drugs like LSD, PCP, or psilocybin (mushrooms) is an automatic disqualifier unless used as a juvenile.
- Less than honorable military discharge.
- Previous denial, revocation, or voluntary surrender of a Texas peace officer license.
- Pending civil or criminal litigation (excluding minor traffic offenses).
- Termination from law enforcement due to moral character issues.
- Inclusion on the Brady list in Collin County or related areas (other lists reviewed case-by-case).
- Tattoos deemed indecent, extremist, racist, or sexist.
